The rock gods of Malaysia - One Buck Short, are preparing for a revolution. The band’s guitarist, Rahul, talks about getting electrocuted, being attacked by local DJs and his plans for Rockaway 2010. By Abirami Durai.
If you live in Malaysia and have never heard of One Buck Short, well, you might as well crawl back under the hole you came from. Because this punk rock group are certainly no small fry. Fresh off their Rockaway 2009 and One Movement, Perth success, they have added performances in Studio C Live, to their illustrious resume. If the sky’s the limit, then these guys are aiming for another planet altogether!
What was it like organising Rockaway 2009? Was it a “Never again” moment or a “Cant wait for next year” thing?
“Definitely CAN’T WAIT! In fact, we’re already planning the next one, which should take place in June 2010 and we’re hoping to add a couple of regional acts and 1 international act pending the sponsorship that pulls through.”
What are your thoughts on your involvement in Studio C Live?
“We’re really excited about it - especially to play in Kuantan, which is a spot where we’ve only ever played once before.”
How would you describe the current Malaysian music scene?
“Wow, I think the acts now have more avenues to push their music, with the entry of stations like XFM (which only plays local music). Also, the gigs and events are getting better... no more dodgy bars with roofs falling off!”
Any young Malaysian bands you think are gonna make it big?
“There are tons of Malaysian bands who are really good... I’m now digging acts like Mic Bandits, Pure Vibracion, An Honest Mistake, Car Crash Hearts, They Will Kill Us All, Incarnation and Rashdan Harith.”
What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you guys on stage?
“Ohhh, I remember this one show in Kedah where I got electrocuted on stage... and at that same show I tripped over a guitar amp too... haha it was a mess! Absolute mess!”
Do you get a lot of groupies?
“All I’ll say is that there’s always room for more!”
Quote:
“One Movement was our first time performing in Perth and to be the only Malaysian act performing at the festival made it even more special!”
